MEDICATIONS  AFTER  STROKE  CAN  CAUSE

        "TEMPORARY"  HAVOC  IN  ONE'S  LIFE!

It is inevitable that when one has had a stroke,  they will be on some

sort of after-stroke medication, at some point.  It all depends on the type
of stroke you have, the complications that can arise after stroke, or have
arisen due to the stroke.  It also depends on how quickly you get to the
hospital.

If you have an ischemic stroke which is the most common and accounts
for between 70%-80% of all strokes and you get to the hospital
within three hours, there are certain treatments that can be administered.
They have to be administered within three hours for them to be effective.
Only 1%-2% of stroke victims arrive at the hospital within the three hour
time frame and this is the primary reason stroke victims do not receive this
agent.  These drugs are used to break up the blood clots.

If you have a hemorrhagic stroke, which is bleeding in the brain or
between the brain and the skull, these agents cannot be administered.
The ischemic stroke is a blood clot in the artery which blocks the flow of
blood and oxygen to the brain.  When this happens, brain cells can start to die.

It is possible for a stroke victim to be on a number of prescriptions, when
released from the hospital.  Some of these can include medication for the
heart, for cholesterol, for high blood pressure, a blood thinner, for headaches
and possibly for seizures.  You want to speak with your doctor, so you know
what medications you are taking and why you are taking them.  Learn the
possible side effects.  You also need to let the doctor know of these side effects.
He may be able to change the medication to a different kind.  He may have to
change it a few times before the correct effects take place... "without" the bad
side effects.

Check out these articles for explanations of different medications that may be
helpful in after stroke treatment.  Talk to your doctor about questions you may
have.  Your pharmacist can also be of great help in explaining side effects that
can be caused by medications.
